What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The learners have to understood that systems have dynamic behaviour. In this Step they learn that it may be possible to change the behaviour of the system consciously or with a specific intention.<\/p>\n<p>The first step is to identify where to intervene in the system, that is, identify \u2018leverage points\u2019 as points that are most likely to succeed or have the desired impact.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1584&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;border-blk&#8221;]<strong>What is a leverage point?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the physical world, \u2018leverage\u2019 occurs when an input of force into a system generates a greater output force. \u00a0Leverage is about relative efficiency and efficacy of possible interventions. Activities, tasks and suggested learning methods<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>First, to help<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>learners understand what a leverage point is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Show the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lk0xgCpoqR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Niki Lauda video (Minute 3.55).<\/u><\/a>Facilitate a discussion among the learners to identify different leverage point(s) in the story. (These include for example: the gear stick, attraction between people, character of the driver, capacity of the engine).<\/li>\n<li>Discuss how the speed of a moving vehicle, say a bicycle, car or boat can be controlled (especially, if it is not possible to use the Niki Lauda video). For example, in a car, the gear stick is a leverage point. In a boat, it is the paddle. Are there other leverage points as well? (E.g., the accelerator or the brake in a car).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having learnt about Leverage Point, learners should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a good look at their system model and identify such components that can influence the behaviour of other elements. \u00a0Are certain components in the system model are more influential than others. Do changes in these components ultimately cause the system to behave in a certain way?<\/li>\n<li>Compare the effect of the behaviour of particular elements on the behaviour of the whole system. The more influential components may be \u201cleverage points\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Think about the part of the system they should intervene in, to change the behaviour of the system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, learners use the output and discussions of Step 3 (systems diagram) to mark leverage points in their system diagram.<\/p>\n<p>Learning methods suggested are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.infilon.net\/systemsthinking\/brainstorming-methods\/\">Brainstorming<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.infilon.net\/systemsthinking\/transfer\/\">Transfer<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h6><strong>5.
